What Art Supplies do I need for Acrylic Painting

Let's Get Started
The first thing you're going to need are acrylic paints and a medium size jar of water (or two jars of water; if you're going to work on a really large painting). Also...make sure you've picked out your art brushes ahead of time and your easel has a nice fresh canvas too. Hand towels are a must when painting, some pallet paper (or pallet) and a bottle of glaze, either high or medium gloss.

I will explain the types of brands I use and why I use them in my paintings. I'll also share some artist advise concerning supplies so you can start painting your projects with confidence.

Brushes:
Having the right brushes is so important! This will save you lots of frustration and time since cheap brushes can leave bristles on your canvas while you paint and no artist wants that. I find American Painter Bushes are excellent and I've stuck with them since I started painting.

"Never leave your paint brushes
soaked in water especially over night an
always rinse them after finishing up since acrylics dry permanently on the bristles."

Acrylic Paint:
Starting out with acrylics can be overwhelming. There are many brands to choose from but Golden Acrylic Paints give your canvas the right amount of coverage. A little goes a long way and perfect for professional artists and beginners who want to go that route. I highly recommend this brand. I also use, Grumbacher and Liquitex as well.

Hand Towels:
You need hand towels always, when painting. Make sure they are soft ready to wipe your brushes down as you work. I always have a good stack in my studio. You could never have enough of them for your painting projects. Paper towels work too but hand towels are nicer on your brushes.

Easels and Canvases:
Choosing the right stand is key. I use one that holds up a 42' canvas (large easel) which I love but I also have a table size one as well. When painting smaller pieces try not to place them on a flat surface since painting is about mindset and forming bad habits can form easily when it comes to creating art.

Canvases should always be stretched and for professional use only. A good canvas grabs the paint the right way and prevents art work from fading or cracking.
As far as art pallets? I use the disposal pallet pads instead of a traditional palette that needs rinsing only because it's more convenient for me.

Glaze:
You're finally done. Glazing is the last step after signing your art work. Liquitex Glazing is what you need for this step. You can either get high or medium gloss. Glazing your paintings protect your art work from damage and dust and it gives your projects a beautiful finish. When glazing make sure to use a flat blush with super soft bristles and do one coat at a time. I usually wait 24 hours before I apply the second coat.

Well, I hope this article helped you and gave you a better understanding of what is needed to start painting with acrylics.
